How to Match Lavender Color in Your Outfits
Just say the word “lavender” and your mind fills with fields of flowers in that unmistakable color, and your nose can almost smell the scent of this plant. Can a single word create such a vivid image? Yes, especially if it refers to a sensory experience we already recognize.
The Lavender Color: Origins
As always, we like to start by telling you a bit of history about the topics we are about to discuss. Lavender has always been known for its beneficial and aromatic properties: this is why the ancient Greeks and later the Romans used it to scent thermal waters. The plant owes its name to this use: from the Latin term for “to wash”.
As for the shade, it was created in the 14th century and mainly adopted for refined and high-quality garments, mostly intended for a male audience, but it soon began to be associated with homosexual people. It is said that even Oscar Wilde, whose homosexuality is no longer a secret, used to call the hours spent with his lovers “purple hours,” defining them through the color of their clothes.
Today it continues to be used by movements for gender equality and the defense of LGBT community rights: between pink and blue, a color that is already a meeting point.
How to Best Match Lavender
After this brief historical overview, let's move on to the part that interests us most: the combinations. We have divided them into categories: from basic to more extreme. And you? Where do you fit?
Comfort Zone: If You Want to Experiment but Not Too Much
You’re not used to wearing lavender or similar shades (wisteria, lilac, for example), but you want to experiment. Good, the world of purple shades is at your disposal and we’ll introduce you to it step by step.
-
White (cream, ivory, ice, and all the nuances you want): definitely the color you can pair with the most ease. Elisabetta Franchi offers every shade, so you can create your seasonal combinations perfectly. It’s fine to pair them as a set (lavender top and white pants/skirt or vice versa) or, in the case of dresses, you can play with contrast: brighten a sack dress or a white sheath dress with lavender bag and shoes, or use white to illuminate your outfits in the season’s color.
- Gold. When choosing between gold and silver for jewelry and accessories in general, gold wins with lavender. Gold touches perfectly complement your new looks, whether chain belts, jewelry, or details on bags and shoes you choose.
-
Jeans. For your everyday looks, clearly there’s the wildcard: denim. But be careful: denim shades are not interchangeable, so choose carefully which to pair with your lavender top based on the intensity of your garment’s color.
Fashion Victim: Intermediate Level
If you already know how to play well with colors and limit the use of comfort looks, we have thought of a level up in experimentation for you: you can show off one of the tips we’re about to give you for your next ceremony or special event, if you’re not yet ready to dare in everyday life.
Lavender pairs very well with pastel shades, especially very soft ones: pale green, straw yellow, a shy pink, and even light blue. This delicate palette is typically chosen for certain types of events (weddings, garden parties, or elegant daytime settings, and so on). You can also use two different shades of purple and create a top + skirt or pants set: but no more than two!
For the daily routine, we recommend neutral colors: hazelnut, cocoa, camel, and similar tones go well with lavender, and if you’re good with combinations, you can also add a third color, which could generally be white. For example: neutral-colored pants, white top, casual lavender jacket. Or, lavender dress and camel trench coat, white bag.
And for the evening? Break up your lavender outfits with black, but make sure it’s a black without any doubt: very deep!
Extreme Makeover Fashion Edition
If you’ve reached this section and still want to dare, maybe you’re the one who can give us some advice: we love your enterprising spirit!
For you who don’t fear others’ looks (as long as they are admiring or curious, and not “How do you dress”), we have thought of 3 additional pairing proposals: bright green, yellow (but warm), and animal prints.
- We mainly recommend animal print for outerwear and the lower part of the outfit. Opt for an animal print with a neutral background or black/white alternation (for example, zebra print).
- Equally striking is the pairing with green and yellow. If you’ve already moved past pastel shades, you can go for a beautiful emerald green and a mustard yellow or orange-leaning yellow. Does it seem like too much color? Actually, these three variants form a triad on the color wheel: they are “optically” made to harmonize well together. It’s just up to us to get used to out-of-the-box combinations: learning to dare, with taste, can be a fun way to create your own style.
